Liverpool City Region is no stranger to the global stage, a place well known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and dynamic business environment.

As it continues to rise as a leading international convention destination, the appointment of Andrew Harrison as Marketing Liverpool’s International Bidding Manager marks an exciting new chapter.

With his extensive background in the events and conventions industry and a deep-rooted passion for Liverpool City Region, Andrew is set to play a pivotal role in elevating our region’s status as a leading destination for hosting major international events. Here, we delve into Andrew’s journey, his plans for Liverpool City Region’s meeting and incentive travel industry, and what excites him about his new role as a key member the Liverpool Convention Bureau team.

Andrew, can you tell us a little about your background and how you found your way into the events and conventions industry?

My journey into the events and conventions industry began after I returned home from studying Business Studies at Sheffield Hallam University. In August 2013, I started working at ACC Liverpool, where I initially focused on identifying international opportunities and converting them into successful bids for future events. During my five years there, I was able to play a role in the formation of Club Liverpool in 2015, alongside Jane Fawley, which is something I’m thrilled to be involved with again.

“During my tenure, I progressed to the role of Bid and Research Executive, leading the charge on numerous international bids for ACC Liverpool. This role allowed me to build strong relationships with clients and further engage with the Club Liverpool programme. My time at ACC Liverpool was incredibly fulfilling, and I’m eager to be back in this fast-paced industry, bringing delegates from all over the world to our incredible city region.”

What attracted you to the role of International Bidding Manager at Liverpool Convention Bureau?

“Having worked closely with Liverpool Convention Bureau (LCB) during my time at ACC Liverpool, I had a front-row seat to the amazing work the team does. When the opportunity to join LCB arose, it was an easy decision. I knew I wanted to return to an industry I loved, and there’s no better place to do that than with LCB. The chance to contribute to the city’s continued success in attracting international events was too good to pass up.

“I’ve always admired the collaborative spirit at LCB and the strong relationships I’ve built with the team and partners across the city. I’m excited to be back, working with familiar faces and meeting new ones, as we bring more international events to Liverpool. It’s an incredible feeling to be part of a team that’s so dedicated to showcasing what our city has to offer on the global stage.

How have your previous experiences at ACC Liverpool and the University of Liverpool prepared you for this role?

“My time at ACC Liverpool gave me an in-depth understanding of what it takes to attract international events to the city. I’ve been involved in numerous bids and have a clear vision of the types of events we should target to align with the city’s strengths. I’m also well-versed in the Club Liverpool Ambassador programme, having helped set it up back in 2015. This experience has been invaluable, and I’m eager to engage with our ambassadors again.

“At the University of Liverpool, I was responsible for engaging with international graduates through events, newsletters, and reunion activities. This role enhanced my ability to communicate with a diverse global audience and provided me with a fresh perspective on the events industry. I believe these experiences will allow me to bring innovative ideas to my role as International Bidding Manager.

What are some of the most exciting international events you’ve worked on in the past?

“Two events that stand out are ESPO 2023 and ESPE 2024. The former was a recent success, and it was thrilling to see it come to fruition after years of hard work. I vividly remember the moment we won the bid—it was a sunny Saturday in 2018, and I received the call from our ambassador, Ray Clarke. Knowing that all our efforts led to a successful event is incredibly rewarding.

“ESPE 2024, which is happening this November, holds a special place for me because it was the first successful bid that I was involved in. The process was highly competitive, and it was a significant achievement for Liverpool City Region. Outside of the convention sector, I’m proud of the online event series I initiated at the University of Liverpool, like ‘Bringing the World to Liverpool’ and ‘Liverpool Leaders’. Interviewing high-profile graduates, including James Quincey, CEO of Coca-Cola, was a highlight for me.”

What are your main responsibilities as the International Bidding Manager, and how do you plan to approach them?

My primary responsibility is to identify and secure international events for venues across Liverpool, particularly focusing on those with fewer than 500 delegates. Once a lead is identified, I’ll lead the bidding process, collaborating closely with key stakeholders such as our ambassadors, hotels, and venues to ensure our bids stand out.

“My approach is rooted in strong organisation and communication. I plan to build LCB’s existing strong relationships with all stakeholders involved in the bid process, ensuring everyone continues to understand what’s needed to make our future bids successful. Additionally, I’ll be utilising valuable resources, like the ICCA Database, to match events with the strengths of the Liverpool City Region, giving us the best chance of winning bids.

How do you envisage Liverpool City Region’s future potential as a leading international convention destination?

Liverpool City Region is a truly unique destination for international conventions. What makes it so special is its variety of venues, the exceptional welcome and the city’s walkability, which are all a huge plus for delegates. The charm and warmth of the people here are also well-known globally, and it’s amazing how many visitors fall in love with the region after experiencing it firsthand. I’m excited to showcase these qualities to clients worldwide and help them see why Liverpool City Region is simply an outstanding choice when it comes to hosting perfect events.

What are your top priorities for your first year in this role?

“My priority is to re-engage with stakeholders across Liverpool City Region, building collaborations that align with our core sector strengths. LCB is committed to attracting high-quality conferences that resonate with our community and create lasting legacies.

“I’m excited to work with our ambassadors to elevate Liverpool City Region globally while contributing to our local economy. Our focus is on attracting impactful events that draw on our region’s strengths and benefit our community for years to come. The potential here is vast, and I’m eager to champion events that will enrich our region and leave a lasting legacy.”
