Liverpool has received a prestigious “Tourism Oscar” for its outstanding hosting of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
This month, Liverpool was honoured with the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Tourism’ award at the 2024 Visit England Excellence Awards, marking one of the rare instances where an entire city has been recognized with this accolade.
This award adds to a growing list of national honours celebrating the remarkable collaboration between the public and private sectors across the city region, which culminated in an unforgettable two-week Eurovision event, hailed as the most successful ever staged.
Liverpool has received a prestigious “Tourism Oscar” for its outstanding hosting of last year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
Sue Finnegan, Commercial Manager, Marketing Liverpool, attended the ceremony to accept the award. She said:
“Winning the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Tourism’ award for our hosting of the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest is a testament to Liverpool City Region’s ambitious spirit and collaborative strength. In this city, we can move mountains when we share visions and work together.
“This latest accolade underscores our city’s ability to shine on the global stage, turning an amazing global song contest into something even more unforgettable. Eurovision 2023 was a cultural extravaganza and a new highlight for the contest. We’re not just setting new standards; we’re revolutionising them. This magic is what our region loves to offer to major international events that choose to host their event in our fantastic region.”
A report earlier this year, commissioned by the British Council, in partnership with Liverpool City Council and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, concluded that the City has revolutionised the hosting of the annual song contest.
This latest award follows the BBC’s recent BAFTA win for best Live Event and the City Council’s PR Moment award.
It also comes just a week after Liverpool was named the best large city in the UK for a short break, according to a Which? survey and the UK’s best city for food, according to Time Out.
