Blindingly beautiful celebrations of art. A glittering array of awards and nominations. An enviable spread of glowing international column inches. An abundance of high-calibre, high-octave and high-kicking events happening right now and in the near future.
All these things and more have left Marketing Liverpool feeling pretty good, as November brings us plenty to smile about and reassuring evidence that hard work pays off. Take a look at my latest quick-fire-round-up of ‘things you need to know this month’ direct from our monthly boardroom meeting to you (without the boring bits).

VISITLIVERPOOL
- VisitLiverpool’s national Autumn/Winter Collection campaign continues to profile this season’s flagship events and exhibitions from across Liverpool City Region.
- Turner Prize launched at Tate Liverpool to positive reviews and runs and will run until 19th March 2023.
- River of Light runs from 21 October – 6 November 2022 and is lit from 5pm – 9pm daily. The outdoor illuminated gallery on Liverpool Waterfront has 10 artworks across a 2km loop, featuring light and sound from local, national and international artists. The event has been featured in arts publications including Wonderland, Dezeen, Its Nice That and CNN.
- The Marketing Liverpool team have encouraged partners to enter the forthcoming ‘Liverpool City Region Annual Tourism Awards’ and have expressed messages of good luck to all entrants.
- The ‘Our Place in Space’ solar system trail opened in city and runs until 6th November, where visitors can jog to Jupiter, swing by Saturn and dance around the Sun — all without ever leaving Earth!
- Liverpool Attractions Group launched their latest campaign this pre-half-term. The campaign featured adverts on Radio City, highlighting things to see and do for families this season.
- New VisitLiverpool Partners this month include Home@2 Tancred Road.
- A UK Inbound Familiarisation trip, held on 11 October, saw London-based international operators experience a variety of attractions such as Liverpool FC, Cavern Club and Beatles Story, amongst others.
- Marketing Liverpool Campaign Manager, James Wood attended the VisitBritain Spanish Roadshow from 17-19 October, which provided the opportunity to meet pre-vetted, high quality, travel trade representatives from across Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia.
DIGITAL, PRESS AND PR
- PLAY Airlines are operating a new route from Reykjavik, Iceland direct to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Great news for the inbound short-break market into Liverpool City Region. It launched on 7th October.
- Marketing Liverpool arranged for two of Iceland’s most influential newspapers, mbl.is and DV to visit Liverpool on the inaugural flight with PLAY Airlines, delivering further international coverage for the new route and Liverpool City Region, as a holiday destination.
- Leading Texas-based cultural publication, Culture Map visited Liverpool this month to cover all things culture and heritage related to a future Liverpool-focussed feature.
- Marketing Liverpool arranged for Spanish TV company Valencians AL Mon to visit Liverpool City Region to film a new destination piece promoting Liverpool as a holiday destination.
- Liverpool has been voted one of the ‘best cities in the UK’, by readers of CN Traveller, as well as one of the ‘most friendly’.
- Marketing Liverpool contributed to the national media and press coverage of Cruise Liverpool’s 15th Anniversary celebrations.
- The VisitEngland Attraction Accolade winners were announced this month. Chester Zoo and Liverpool Anglican Cathedral took home ‘Gold Awards’. Mersey Tunnel Tours was awarded the ‘Best Told Story Award’ and Liverpool’s Old Dock Tour was highlighted as a ‘Hidden Gem’
- Time Out voted Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle as one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the UK
LIVERPOOL CONVENTION BUREAU (LCB)
- Recent figures estimate that the September 2022 Labour Party Conference boosted the Liverpool City Centre economy by around £20 million and the event will return to ACC Liverpool next Autumn.
- LCB featured within Conference and Meetings World Magazine – linking into the teams attendance at IMEX America.
- The team hosted a hotel partner meeting for front of house staff around the welcome for World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022.
- LCB joined our partners VisitBritain at the international trade show IMEX America, this month. The team arranged more than 35 pre-appointments with clients and delivered numerous presentations to global event organisers, positioning Liverpool City Region as the perfect host city.
- Together with partners, LCB delivered the Eurovision Hoteliers meeting the 18 October, in conjunction with Access Bookings and Liverpool Hospitality.
- On the 31 October, the LCB team also helped to facilitate the MICE Book industry supplier/buyer showcase, held at The Spine, with more than 50 people in attendance.
SPORT LIVERPOOL
- World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool 2022 has officially landed in Liverpool, bringing more than 400 world-class gymnasts and thousands of spectators to Liverpool. The event is runningfrom 29 October to 6 November.
- Coverage for World Gymnastics Championships Liverpool has been global, with more than 75 territories broadcasting to more than 650 million people and includes large media outlets such as EuroSport, BBC Sport, NBC, TV Asahi (Japan), EUROVISION, NOS, VRT and the IOC Olympic Channel amongst others.
- The Rugby League World Cup commenced on the 15th October, whereupon St. Helens’ Totally Wicked Stadium played host to some amazing action featuring Tonga vs Papa New Guinea (18th Oct), Tonga vs Wales (24th Oct) and Australia vs Italy (29th Oct)
CULTURE, MUSIC AND FILM OFFICE
- This year’s Black History Month featured a whole host of arts and community organisations from across Liverpool, with live music performances, films, workshops, debates and so much more – all centred around the theme: ‘Let’s Talk About Race’.
- Liverpool successfully bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine next year. Congratulations came from far and wide including the Mayor of Odesa. On the back of the hosting announcement, we’ve already seen positive exposure across media platforms, including The Independent, Granada Reports, Virgin Radio, RTE, Liverpool Echo, The Guide, ThatEurovisionSite.com and Euro Voix News.
- The Royal Television Society North West (RTS NW) award nominations were announced this month. They included 4x nominations for ‘The Responder’, which was supported by the LCR Production Fund. Other Liverpool City Region based nominations include: 4x nominations for ‘Hollyoaks/Lime Pictures’; 2x nominations for ‘Peacock’; 2 x nominations for ‘Anne’; 1 for ‘LA Productions’ and 1 for ‘Everything We Know About Love’.
