It was a great night on Friday 29 April for Liverpool, as Liverpool China Partnership President, Directors and the organisation itself were presented with multiple awards across all categories at the 17th Greater China Awards for their great contribution and success in facilitating business partnerships with China. The Awards are organised by the Department for International Trade North West.
The Greater China Awards honour and celebrate North West based companies and organisations’ significant contributions to developing business links with Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. The awards celebrate UK success and innovation in exporting to Greater China for at least three years and the positive impact this has had on the UK economy. Previously in 2020, Liverpool China Partnership had won the Recognition Award at the 15th Greater China Awards.
Established in 2015, Liverpool China Partnership is Liverpool City Region’s pioneering membership organisation that facilitates purpose-driven relationships between China and the UK. It is a major force in expanding Liverpool and the city region’s business, academic and civic partnerships with China.
Recognition of the Partnership, its President and two of its Directors has largely been powered by their combined tremendous effort in continuing to strengthen trading, commercial, and academic relationships with Chinese markets, especially during Covid. For the Liverpool China Partnership this has been through providing enormous support and expert guidance to local UK companies to combat challenges brought by Covid and to connect with, enter, and develop relationships with Chinese partners and markets.
This also builds on their positive impact on the UK economy brought by these strengthened links, and their participation in high profile events in China which helps raise the profiles of UK companies and organisations in building active links with Chinese partners. As set out in Consul General Mr Zheng Xiyuan speech to open the celebrations ‘Liverpool China Partnership continues to build on its sister city relationship with Shanghai to build trade’. Liverpool China Partnership also made great contributions to the restoration of Liverpool’s Chinatown and the development of the local Chinese communities.
The Awards ceremony took place in Manchester and was presented by the Department for International Trade North West Head of Global Programmes Lynn Shaw alongside Department for International Trade Head of Asia Pacific Philomena Chen who presented the awards to Liverpool China Partnership’s Chairman Paul Kallee-Grover MBE, Liverpool China Partnership’s President Gary Millar, Dr. Julia Wang, Deputy Director of International Relations at Liverpool John Moores University, and Dr. Xiaofeng Wu, International Partnerships Manager at the University of Liverpool.
Gary Millar, President of the Liverpool China Partnership and Winner of the Recognition Award said:
“It is a huge honour to have been awarded a personal recognition award for my role in bilateral relations and trade between the UK and China. Thank you so much to the Greater China Awards team and judges for recognising the power and benefit of our shared and pioneering vision for mutual prosperity and cooperation, strong and effective relationship building and our long-standing friendship with China.
‘Together with the UK government, Northern Powerhouse, the Isle of Man and Liverpool City Region, we are hugely proud of our over 180-year-old history with China. Plus, it helps recognise our continued promotion of UK interests in trade, education, research, sport, health, culture and diplomacy. Of course, being a finalist is alone indeed an honour, but being a winner recognises the impact partnership working brings in helping successfully extend a golden, warm and prosperous embrace of our many friends in China.’
